Part 4 Shankly`s Seasons 53/54

Part 4 Shankly`s Seasons 53/54
The 53/54 season saw Scunthorpe finish above us for the first time ever. Bill Shankly still with one hand tied behind his back financially, signed Inside-forward Archie Wright from Blackburn Rovers and right-winger Derek Stroud from Bournemouth, both for small fees and signed keeper Clarry Williams from a Doncaster local league side. Out went Wally Galbraith to become manager of Accrington Stanley and McCue joined Shrewsbury Town. Hayhurst, Lloyd and Hart all dropped into non-league football,

We won an opening day derby at York 3-0 and Clarry Williams had a storming debut. Scunthorpe then earned their first ever league points against the Mariners with a 1-0 victory in the local derby at Blundell Park on the Wednesday (our chosen traditional midweek fixture day in those days).

Billy Cairns aged 40 years and 324 days made his last bow for Town in the 3-1 defeat at Accrington on September 16, setting a club record for the oldest league player. The run up to Christmas was pretty dire with 6 straight defeats; although three wins at Christmas appeared to lighten the mood even if there was no way the club would go up again.

Shankly again cited lack of ambition by the board and resigned this time moving to lowly Workington Town. He had a point the problems lay in a lack of goals. Cairns the centre forward had not been replaced and had been playing at least two years past his sell by date.
