Part 3 Shankly`s Seasons 52/53,

The 1952/3 season started with a real buzz with both Shankly and Chairman Pearce getting behind the formation of the official Grimsby Town Supporters Club. Town enjoyed our best ever start to a season. We won the first five (two against Scunthorpe United), then drew two away games. We won the next two before Carlisle knocked the stuffing out of their former manager and his chargelings.

The season fizzled out after that with a particularly bleak final 14 games that saw just four victories as we finished fifth. An ageing side and lack of funds had done for us. Plus a young Shankly had not quite found that famous firm but fair knack of getting rid of players when the time was right.

Though loyalty is commendable in most walks of life it has a very short life span in football. But then football management has the steepest learning curve of all professions in the face of fickle with a capital F.
