Part 2 Shankly`s Seasons 51/52

Part 2 Shankly`s Seasons 51/52
Liverpool Legend Bill Shankly`s first season in charge saw us lock horns with two local adversaries in Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United who we would actually play for the first time competitively.

The Mariners promptly lost the first two games 1-3 at Chesterfield and 2-3 at home to the Lincoln. But Shanks was never one to hide and quickly made use of the newly installed public address to chat to Mariners fans before the game. This made him a cult hero and the team and the crowd became a formidable force at home as the sides fortuned turned. The town warmed to him too with the Pontoon packed and Blundell Park regularly seeing 20,000. Ever the canny Scot the reserves would even see 5,000 plus when he announced at the preceding home game that he would be playing.

Christmas in those days saw you play your most local rivals home and away on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The Mariners did the double over Scunthorpe United 3-2 and then the following day 3-1 at the Old Showground in the first competitive meetings between the two. Lincoln City took the gloss of that by knocking Town out of the FA Cup, they were also top of the table and making for promotion.

With only one going up in those days Shanks demanded a full blown assault which the team responded to magnificently. In the twenty remaining games we lose just once and win 11 on the trot at one point. Alas it was not enough and we would finish runners up as Lincoln went up with the Division 3 North Championship.
